Ladies and gentlemen, dear young friends, good afternoon!
It’s an honor to be here at Shandong University in Jinan…the City of Springs!! Where history, learning, and innovation flow together. Walking by Baotu Spring this past weekend, I was struck by the clarity and steadiness of the water. It reminded me of what a good idea, what a good story feels like: fresh, life-giving, and meant to be shared.
Thank you to the organizers of the “Stories of China Retold in English” Challenge, to New Channel, which TED is proud to call our partner in China, and to Shandong University, one of the nation’s most comprehensive universities, renowned for its global vision, rigorous scholarship, and excellence across world-ranked disciplines. Just as countless groundbreaking ideas have been born and nurtured here at Shandong University, your spirit of openness, innovation, and pursuit of knowledge deeply aligns with TED’s mission to spread ideas that inspire and transform.
TED began in 1984 as a conference on Technology, Entertainment, and Design, and has grown into a global platform for voices from every region—scientists and artists, entrepreneurs and educators, researchers and students. Millions watch TED Talks daily; classrooms use them; and this year, local volunteers will host more than 4,600 TEDx events across 170 countries and regions.
What truly matters is the dialogue these talks spark. When a clear idea meets an open mind, people listen across differences. Hearing a story from another culture builds empathy, not just knowledge. That is how ideas worth spreading become bridges worth crossing — bridges that connect curiosity with understanding, local insights with global change, and individual inspiration with collective progress.
This year, we are expanding our strategic partnership with New Channel, and we’re honored to be one of the co-organizers of the Challenge. Our shared conviction is simple: China’s young people have stories the world needs to hear—stories of ingenuity, resilience, tradition, and renewal.
When you tell your story in your own voice, in English, or in other languages, you don’t replace your culture—you amplify it. You invite the world to see a more authentic and multidimensional China through your eyes. Together, we aim to give you the tools and confidence to do exactly that.
Here in Jinan, water finds its path through stone. A great story does the same—it finds its path through noise, straight to the heart. From years of coaching TED speakers, three essentials stand out as to how to tell a great story:
(A clear throughline)
(Show, don’t tell)
(Earned credibility)
1. A clear throughline
· Ask: What is the single idea I want people to remember?
· If you can’t say it in one sentence, the audience won’t either.
2. Show, don’t tell
· Stories beat statistics. Paint a vivid scene: a person, a place, a turning point.
· Share what you saw, felt, or learned. Bring us with you.
· One specific example is more persuasive than five abstract claims.
3. Earned credibility
· You don’t need fame; you need honesty. Speak from what you know, and name what you’re still learning.
· Humility builds trust. Trust opens minds.
And here are two practical storytelling tips for students:
(Edit for clarity)
1. Start with a hook, end with a gift
A hook is a surprising question, a brief story, or a striking image. In the first 20 seconds, show us why we should care.
And a gift is one actionable takeaway—something your audience can try, see differently, or share.
2. Edit for clarity
Write it, then cut 20%. Swap long phrases for short, concrete words.
Read it aloud to a friend; wherever attention drifts, tighten that line.
To the young participants: congratulations for stepping forward. Your voices matter. Your stories can make China more legible to the world—and make the world more connected to you.
On behalf of TED, I wish this conference great success. May the ideas and stories born in Shandong travel far, inspire many, and return home even stronger.
Thank you!
